Our Lady of Peace’s Student Council consists of five executive board positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary and Corresponding Secretary. The council plans to add a Parliamentarian position for the upcoming school year. The Parliamentarian helps the President maintain order and makes sure Parliamentary Procedure is being followed. The President is responsible for organizing and running meetings and events. Vice President aids the President in carrying out his/her responsibilities and helps oversee the committees. Treasurer oversees fundraising and helps organize where charitable proceeds will go. Minutes of each meeting are taken by the Recording Secretary, who is also in charge of attendance and paperwork. The Corresponding Secretary helps insure good communication between Representatives and homerooms, as well as any other correspondence. Each grade (grades five through eight), has two Representatives and two alternates. Their job is to keep their grade informed about what Student Council is doing and bring their grade’s ideas back to the Council. There are several committees, run by their Committee Heads, who help carry out those ideas.
One of Student Council’s main goals is service to the school and the community. In the past, OLP has been able to donate to causes to: Haiti, the Red Cross, Hurricane Katrina victims, shoes to Guatemala, OLP food pantry. Student Council also heads the Giving Tree program at Christmastime.
Another goal Student Council strives to achieve is promoting strong leadership. Each year, OLP sends at least five council members to IAJHSC (Illinois Association of Junior High Student Councils) Leadership Camp. The students try to act as the leaders of the school and good examples for the younger students.
Student Council Coordinators are Miss Haggerty and Mrs. Mangan.
